The Institute was founded in 1952 with the aim of pursuing high-quality research in the field of biomedical science as a comprehensive discipline. Today it is the only research institute exclusively engaged in medical research in Hungary. It has evolved into the neuroscience center of Hungary for the last 15 years and is now considered to be the leading neuroscience research institute in Central Europe.
